Why did the World Trade Center towers collapse?

The suspicious grey explosion-clouds right below the black smoke caused by burning kerosene.

In-depth video coverage of the World Trade Center collapse

According to Dr. Thomas Eagar it was due to heat (interview), and the most astounding thing he says is that the way the towers collapsed were not surprising!

The towers collapsed into themselves the way we know it from buildings being demolished by means of explosives - and they always told us this is high-tech, precision-work, and you need engineers to calculate the exact places where the explosives are being placed!

There also have been reports of fireman actually reaching the level of the fire and planning how to put it out - they were not in panic and didn't think the building could collapse - so it's unlikely there really was the enourmously big and hot fire that caused the towers to collapse in the official version.

Reports of explosions after the impact of the planes have also been officially dismissed.

The official version says heat caused steel beams to melt in the heat of burning kerosene. There has been much debate if and under which circumstances kerosene may burn hot enough to melt steel - but: the second plane did not hit the tower directly, like the first one, but at the edge, causing the fuel to evaporate in a huge fireball outside of the WTC!

Clearly visible on the pictures is that the 2nd impact did not occur dead-center like the first one, but diagonally, on the edge of the WTC.

The jet fuel and debris was ejected from the World Trade Center immediately - how likely is it that the damage caused to the structure of the WTC was identical to that one of the first impact, and that again the fire was so hot it melted the steel beams / connectors?

And everybody agrees that a normal fire could not bring down a structure like the World Trade Center.

Conveniently, the steel scrap from the towers has not been properly investigated, but has been sold to steel-companies in India, China, Malaysia and South Korea.

Van Romero is vice president for research at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMTech). The Socorro university has levered itself into one of the elite sites in the world for the study of explosives and terrorism, attracting nearly $10 million a year in federal money for programs that test explosives for US and foreign agencies. On the morning of the attacks, Romero and Tech's finance vice president Denny Peterson, were near the Pentagon.

They had come to Washington to discuss defense-funded research programs at Tech, leaving them very conveniently located to grab NMTech's slice of the imminent cleanup operation. Because New Mexico Tech offers counter-terrorism training of police and fire first responders to terrorism attacks in the United States!

Within hours Romero was telling the Albuquerque Journal that the collapse of the twin towers could have been caused by a small amount of explosive put in more than two points in each of the towers.

"My opinion is, based on the videotapes, that after the airplanes hit the World Trade Center there were some explosive devices inside the buildings that caused the towers to collapse," Romero said.

And Romero should know. After all Van is a demolition expert and a former director of the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center at Tech, which studies the effects of explosions on buildings.

Nevertheless, ten days later Romero had changed his mind. Not only that, but the Albuquerque Journal changed their story too. They altered the original web page about Romero's views.

Until 9/11, no modern steel skyscraper has ever collapsed!

In 2005, the Windsor Tower in Madrid burned for 20 hours, and it was a flaming inferno unlike the WTC fire where it was mainly smoke after the initial fireball..

After the 20-hour-fire, the building was still standing and supported a crane standing on the roof.

There was clearly a lot of fire, and a whole story on fire - but it did not collapse.
